umbraco license guidelines
umbraco is licensed under the open source license GPL - GNU General Public License.
Important License Guidelines - How we see and adopt the GPL
- umbraco may only be distributed as a whole. You may not use part of umbraco to create another stand-alone application, this could be using the UI parts to create another CMS.
- You may not re-brand umbraco
- If creating extensions in XSLT or .NET that cannot work without umbraco (the binaries (dlls) or source) these has to be distributed under the GPL as well
- If in doubt, please contact us before using our software for other than the original purpose. We have a commercial non-GPL license for those in doubt, wishes not to use GPL licensed software or wishes to build a new product based on parts of umbraco.
- Please respect the hard work done by the team - don't see umbraco has an easy short-cut to create another product.
umbraco is free - but...
- To ensure the continuing development of umbraco, companies (consultants / agencies / etc) who’re using umbraco for commercial use are encouraged to donate 3% of the project sum to umbraco.
- The donations are used to fix bugs, security holes and improve the software. Please make sure your implementation partners are following this recommendation - it's your guarantee that umbraco will stay secure!
- It's very easy to donate and you'll receive an invoice for tax deduction. Read all the details and further instructions here.
